You have reached the Economic Developement website for the District of Kitimat. The new website for the city can be found here: http://www.kitimat.ca.

British Columbia, Canada is one of North America’s most competitive and dynamic business locations. My name is Joanne Monaghan, and I am the Mayor of the Port City of Kitimat and you have reached our Invest Canada -- Invest Kitimat website.

Our community and Kitamaat Village - home of the Haisla First Nation are located in the heart of British Columbia’s Pacific Inland Coast and the Kitimat Valley. We are Western Canada's busiest private port, and, as the second of only two wide-flat valleys on Canada’s west coast we are one of few coastal mainland trade locations with ample room for growth.

My community is a successful competitor for new global trade. Over the past 10 years we have attracted, supported and secured investments over $10 Billion – all of which are now in various stages of development.

These multi-million and multi-billion dollar projects include an aluminum manufacturing expansion, liquid natural gas export facilities, and green power developments. There are also substantial port facility developments in the form of break-bulk terminals, aggregate exports, and new petroleum product transhipment facilities that have chosen Kitimat over other British Columbia Port locations for sustainable development.

The District of Kitimat continues to work with other investors whose early-planning stage projects remain confidential. Some represent new activities, not seen before on Canada’s west coast. Targeting broad diversification of the local and regional economy has taken time, however it is paying off. I do not know of any other northwest British Columbia community, or northern community that has attracted, supported and secured such large investment.

Our municipal approach has Kitimat the reputation of being an important and distinctly professional Invest BC and LINX BC community. As our Invest Kitimat promotional approach matures -- so too does success of sustaining our community as a marvel of nature and industry.

Hosting Delegations

Seeing Kitimat Valley and the Private Port of Kitimat from the air and on the ocean is the best way to illustrate the unique features of Kitimat's Private Port, Pacific Inland Coast location and development sites. Proponents and visitors are able to appreciate our platform of sustainability: A Marvel of Nature and Industry. Over the past few years the Mayor of Kitimat and the Manager of Development Information, Investor Services and Economic Promotion have offered dozens of qualified investors comprehensive orientations to the distinctive competencies that set us apart from all other West Coast ports.

The individuals in the delegation photo above are, from left to right: Enbridge Gateway Communications Director D'Arcy Levesque, Former Kitimat Mayor Rick Wozney, Former Mayor of Terrace and Chair of the Regional District of Kitimat Stikine Jack Talstra, President of Enbridge Gateway Project Art Meyer, and Manager of Government and Community Relations Michele Perret.

Kitimat was announced as the terminus for the Enbridge Gateway project in 2005. The $4 Billion Pipeline, Tank Farm and Marine Terminal Project targets a 2009 Application for Approval to the National Energy Board and a 2012-2014 completion date.
